Former Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha joined the Trinamool Congress on Saturday.
Senior TMC leaders like Sudeep Banerjee, Derek O’Brien along with Subrata Mukherjee welcomed Mr. Sinha to the party.
Sinha said, “You will be surprised at today’s development because at this age I am joining a party, when I removed myself from party politics. This is because the country is going through a critical period.”
The 83-year-old politician said that democracy does not mean only elections to be held after five years. “The strength of democracy lies in the strength of institutions and I say it with regret that these institutions, including the judiciary in the country, have been weakened,” he said.
Before officially joining the party, Mr. Sinha spoke to TMC President and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for about 45 minutes at her residence in Kalighat.

Praising Ms. Banerjee, Mr. Sinha said that she is a fighter and hoped that TMC would return to power with a thumping majority. “There should be a message from Bengal about what Modi (Narendra Modi) and Shah (Amit Shah) cannot do from Delhi,” he said, adding that TMC’s victory would strengthen the call. Mr. Sinha also campaigned for the party during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal.
