Textile mill workers continue higher education, work

For the 22 young women, who are all workers in a textile mill in Coimbatore, there are new hopes as they will soon start a new career in insurance and mobile phone manufacturing companies.

The women who worked at the KPR mill had acquired in-house education for school and college education for the past few years, even working in the mill and its garment units.

Placement camp

This year, the mill placed placements camps and 22 candidates, who have completed undergraduate or postgraduate courses, were placed in two companies – Tata Electronics (14 candidates) and Ensuranze (eight candidates).

Karur’s Preeta, who works in KPR’s apparel unit in Arasur, had to find employment while she was studying in class 10 to support her family.

“When I came to know that KPR Mill has helped its employees to continue their studies, I joined the mill’s garment unit in the investigation department. I continued studying in tenth grade in the open school run by Mill. After finishing Plus Two, I joined B.Com (CA) in the education facility at the unit. I worked for eight hours in the garment unit and attended classes for two hours every day. On Sundays, I had classes from dawn to dusk, ”she says. About two months ago, the management told the students about the placement opportunities and encouraged the students to develop their soft skills. Last week, Preeta took a written test and was selected by Tata Electronics.

“I have work experience in textiles. Now, I will learn about mobile phones and develop my skills in that area.

Similarly, Pavithra from Vellore will complete the MBA this year through open university education provided by the mill to its employees. An employee of the mill for the past eight years, he was involved in a campus placement organized by the mill last month and was selected by Ensuranze. She is now participating in soft skill training organized by the mill for 53 workers, who are completing undergraduate or postgraduate programs this year.

KPR Mill Vice President K. Somasundaram told Hindu In the next four days, the mill was expected to select four more companies.

3000 workers studying

Starting education programs for five to 10 workers in 1998, the mill now has 3,000 out of 22,000 workers studying school or higher education courses. About 40% of the workers are from other states and last year the mill also started an education course for them. “Our chairman has asked us to target campus placements for 1,000 workers a year in various sectors. Therefore, we have started a training program for workers who are in final year courses. There are more than 53 workers working in 45 days of soft skill training. With this, employees will join skilled jobs in the corporate sector and have a new career, ”he said.
