Russian ballerina performs on ice to save bay from construction project

Bagautdinova called on the Russians to sign an online petition addressed to President Vladimir Putin asking them to leave the Gulf in its natural state.

Locals of an under-construction project say a unique natural habitat is threatened.

Facing the freezing cold in her pointed boots and white tutu, Bagotindova filmed herself as she performed arabesques and plains on the frozen waters of Batterinaya Bay after planning to make a pimple silo on site.

The dancer at the Mariस्कीski theater posted an online video, which featured music from Tchikovsky’s Swan Lake for swans living in the area, about 50 km west of St. Petersburg.

“It is a unique natural and historic place, where the nest is formed in spring, where families of children celebrate in the summer, where hundreds of fishermen go out on the ice in winter,” she wrote on Facebook. “All of this is a threat of destruction.”

Russia’s TASS news agency reported last year that the Baltic Grain Terminal Company planned to begin construction of a 35 billion-ruble ($ 477 million) terminal on Batarenya Bay.

Sodruzhestvo, an agro-industrial group that owns the Baltic Grain Terminal, declined to comment.

Leningrad Regional Authority reported Reuters It had not issued any construction permits for construction in the area.

Bagautdinova called on the Russians to sign an online petition addressed to President Vladimir Putin to leave the Gulf in its natural state. The petition has more than 7,650 signatures so far.

The 29-year-old said, “It was my heartfelt cry to save a wonderful place, which has a special meaning for me.” Reuters

Bagautdinova said that his family often visited the sandy beaches of the bay in summer and slept there in winter. “It would be great if I danced here, the construction would stop and we could save this amazing natural place,” Bagotindova said. “But I don’t think it’s that easy.”
