Kerala Assembly Election | 1 woman, 3 youth leaders in IUML list

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) announced its candidates for the assembly elections to be held on April 6, after long deliberations at the party’s state president Saeed Hydrali Shihab Thangal’s residence in nearby Pakkakkad on Friday afternoon.

The party will contest in 27 seats this time. In the 2016 elections, IUML contested 24 seats and won 18 of them.

The party also announced its candidates for the Rajya Sabha and Malappuram Lok Sabha by-elections to be held on 6 April. While MP Abdussamad Samdani will contest the Lok Sabha by-election, incumbent P.V. Abdul Wahab will once again be sent to the Rajya Sabha.

Mr. Shihab Thangal announced the list of candidates at a crowded, noisy press conference.

Exception to three

Although the IUML decided not to field the three-time winners, the party’s national general secretary PK Kunhalikutty, state general secretary KPA Majeed, and state secretary and deputy leader MK Munir were exempted.

Mr. Kunhalikutty will contest from Vengara, Mr. Majeed from Tirurangadi and Mr. Munir from Koduvali.

When three prominent leaders of the Muslim Youth League (MYL) were considered, the party made a landmark decision after 25 years giving a woman a chance. Vanita League leader Nurbina Rashid Kozhikode is an IUML candidate in South.

MYL state general secretary PK Firos will contest from Tinur, vice-president Najib Kelvin from Perinthalmna, and Secretary of State AKM Ashraf Manjeswaram. “The party treats the youth with a clear future orientation,” said MYL state president Syed Munawarli Shihab Thangal.

When NA Nelikkunnu and KM Shaji will seek another position from Kasaragod and Azekode respectively, Pottankandi Abdullah and Parakkal Abdulla will be in the fray at Kuthuparamba and Kuttibari respectively.

Dinesh Perumanna will contest as its independent candidate for IUML in Kunnamangalam. CP Cheria Mohammed is a candidate in Thiruvambadi.

P. Ubaidullah, p. Abdul Hameed, TV Ibrahim, PK Bashir, KK Abid Hussain Thangal, and N. Shamsuddin will look for another word from Malappuram, Vallikununnu, Kondoti, Ernad, Kottakkal and Mannarakkad respectively.

UA Latif is the candidate in Manjeri. Manjulamkuzhi Ali has been transferred from Perinthalamna to Manaka. Kurukoli will contest from Moideen Tirur. KNA Khader has been given the responsibility of bringing back Guruvayur. UC Raman is the party’s candidate in Kongad. VA Gafoor, son of VK Abrahamim Kunju, will contest from Kalamassery.

Mr. Thangal said that candidates for Perambra and Punalur or Chadamangalam would be announced later.

Among those who failed to make it to the list at this time, MC Kamaruddin (Manjeswaram), m. Umer (Manjeri), TA Ahmed Kabir (Mankada), PK Abbu Rabb (Tirurangadi), c. Mammootty (Tirur), and VK Ibrahim are Kunjum. (Kalamasari).

Confirming the announcement of the candidates, IUML national works secretary ET Mohammad Bashir said that the party gave due consideration to all sections.

“However, we had handed over the selection to Mr. Thangal. He held a meeting with all concerned and discussed. He heard all the voices before reaching the final list. This is a sign of democracy within the party, ”Mr. Bashir said.
