In its highest single-day jump of the year and the biggest spike in almost seven months, Maharashtra recorded 16,620 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday as its active case increased to 1,26,231.
In contrast to this spike, nearly half of the patients (8,861) were discharged with a state recovery rate of 92.21% in the last 24 hours. However, over one lakh samples were tested in the last 24 hours.
The death of fifty people took the fatal toll to 52,861.
While the total case count has reached 23,14,413, the cumulative recovery stands at 21,34,072.
“A total of 1,75,16,885 laboratory samples have been tested so far, with 23,14,413 (case positivity increasing by 13.21%) 1,08,000 samples have been tested in the last 24 hours,” Monitoring Officer Dr. . Pradeep Awate said that the state’s case has been fatal to 2.28%.
The Pune district reported a day-high of over 3,100 new cases – the highest in the state in any district – to take its total cases to 4,39,562. According to data from the state health department, the number of 11 deaths was reported to be 8,144. However, according to district officials, the active case tally has risen by 20,000 points to 20,241, while the death toll is 9,400.
The city of Mumbai also recorded a huge increase of 1,963 new cases, taking its total to 3,43,962, of which 12,535 are active. Eleven fatal incidents took the city toll at 11,535.
Nagpur district in Vidarbha topped, another dangerous jump was recorded in over 2,200 cases as its total cases increased to 1,73,547, of which 16,964 are active. With five deaths, its toll has increased to 3,584.
North Maharashtra has been witnessing increasing spikes. Nashik added to take its total tally to 1,37,949 in over 1,200 cases, of which 7,688 are active. Three deaths brought the toll to 2,093.
Neighboring Jalgaon registered more than 550 new cases, but no deaths were reported, with a total of 69,604 cases, of which 4,944 are active.
Aurangabad in Marathwada, currently under a lockout, recorded about 900 new cases and two deaths as its total number rose to 59,249, of which 7,148 are active, while it died at 1,289.
However, Western Maharashtra continued to record relatively few cases and deaths. Satara added 150 new cases and there was only one death as the total cases rose to 60,722, of which 1,735 are active and the death toll has risen to 1,858.
Sangli recorded 41 cases and two deaths as the district’s total cases stood at 51,829, of which only 733 are active. Its death toll is 1,800.
There were 34 cases registered in Kolhapur and no deaths as its total number was 50,144, out of which only 401 are active.
Dr. Awatte said that at present, there were 5,83,713 people in domestic quarantine and 5,493 in institutional quarantine facilities across the state.
