England may be forced to field two male teams at the same time after announcing match dates for the 2022 tour of the West Indies which could overlap with their Ashes tour for Australia. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Wednesday that it has agreed to extend the Test series from two matches to three, with the Twenty20 international leg of the tour extended to the original three to five matches series. The T20 games are scheduled to be held from 28 January to 5 February.

It puts fixtures on a potential collision course with the Ashes test in Australia, with the showpiece series well-established in January due to quarantine issues caused by the coronavirus epidemic.

A series of three Test matches in the Caribbean will follow T20 matches, with attractive extra stability partly signaling goodwill towards the cricketing West Indies, which sent men and women teams to England during the epidemic last year.

Teams touring Australia for at least 14 days after taking flight from India, where the men’s Twenty20 World Cup final is to be held on 14 November.

An Ashes series usually begins in November, with only the fifth and final Test, traditionally at the Sydney Cricket Ground, taking place in January.
