Daily COVID-19 case count in the state continues to grow

1,243 individuals test positive; The active case-load increases to 7,291; Chennai tops with 458 cases; Eight more signs of infection

As the number of COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu continued to rise, another 1,243 people tested positive, bringing the total cases to 8,65,693. Active case-load increased to 7,291.

Fresh infections increased in many districts. Chennai, with its neighboring districts of Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram, accounted for 58% of fresh cases.

While Chennai topped the table with 458 cases, Chengalpattu registered 134 and Coimbatore 103 cases. Thiruvallur and Thanjavur reported 87 and 85 cases respectively. 41 cases were reported in Kanchipuram, 33 in Tiruppur, 28 in Salem, 22 in Thiruvarur and 21 in Kanniyakumari. There were 10 to 20 cases in 11 districts, while the number of districts registering less than 10 cases was reduced to 16.

Three returns – each from the UAE, Maharashtra and Rajasthan – were among those who tested positive.

The fresh cases brought Chennai’s total case count to 2,41,127, while Coimbatore’s rally was 57,023 and Chengalpattu’s 54,206. Out of 7,291 active cases in the state, Chennai alone had 2,747, while Chengalpattu and Coimbatore had 669 and 635 active cases respectively.

In Tiruvallur, 509 patients were undergoing treatment.

Eight more people including two died in Chennai due to infection. One death each was recorded in Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Kanchipuram, Thanjavur, Tiruchi and Villupuram. This put the toll at 12,590.

Another 634 persons were discharged after treatment.

Immunization coverage of Tamil Nadu crossed 20 lakh as 1,21,471 persons were vaccinated on Saturday.

So far, 20,88,316 persons have been vaccinated.
