PV Sindhu of India defeated Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 16-21, 21-16, 21-19 on Friday to enter the semi-finals of the All England Open Badminton Championships. Sindhu was drawn to her maximum abilities by the Japanese Yamaguchi, whose cross-court smash found Sindhu in her court forever, but the Indians persevered to the end and made a stunning comeback after losing the first game. With more than 30 shots rallies through the match, both players were also neck-bending in the third game, while Sindhu was seen struggling several times. But the Indian dug deep and dug the match point.

Earlier on Friday, India’s Lakshya Sen was knocked out in the quarter-finals after losing to Mark Caljove of the Netherlands. Lakshya lost the match 17-21 21-16 17-21 in 55 minutes.

On Thursday, he became the youngest Indian to reach the quarter-finals of the All England Open, defeating Thomas Roussel of France 21–18, 21–17.

The Indian women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy also bowed out of the tournament after losing 22-24 12-21 to Selena Pike and Cheryl Seanen of the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

The men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy also bowed out of the tournament after losing 21–16, 11–21, 21–17 to Denmark’s Kim Astrup and Anders Scarup in the second round.

Sindhu led Denmark’s Kristoffersen to a comprehensive victory in the straight game to advance to the quarter-finals on Thursday.

He defeated Christopherson 21-8, 21-8 in just 25 minutes.

After her victory in the quarter-finals, Sindhu will now face the 11th-ranked 23-year-old Pornpavi Chochuvong of Thailand on Saturday.
