2% quota in police force for meritorious players

state government. A final notification to this effect was issued on 2 March.

Meritorious sportspersons in Karnataka will get 2% reservation in the state police force.

The state government has issued a final notification to this effect in the state gazette on 2 March. The rules were followed in the reservation last year and awaited final notification.

Direct recruitment

The special rules will help the players to directly recruit the posts of constables, sub-inspectors and deputy superintendents of police as per the notification.

“The provisions of these rules shall not apply to more than 2% of the posts in direct recruitment of meritorious players for the cadres of police constables, sub-inspectors, and sub-superintendents of police in the police service specified in the schedule,” the notification stated.

Reacting to the move, Additional Director General of Police (KSRP) Alok Kumar tweeted and thanked Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Director General of Police Praveen Sood.

“Final notification regarding recruitment of sportspersons in Police Department has been published. After a long gap of 12 years, henceforth, every police recruit will have a 2% quota for outstanding players, ”he said in the tweet.

‘Fitness culture’

Sources in the police department said the quota for the players was in place till 2009, but was later dropped for various reasons. “This will usher in a culture of fitness in the department,” the official said.

For the last few years, the Karnataka Olympics had been urging the Union government to re-implement the reservation. It was argued that such a move would encourage and motivate the youth for sports.
