Sixteen AIADMK cadres and three DMK men were seriously injured in the violence that erupted during the political campaign Saturday night.
DMK candidate from Karur constituency V. Groups backed by Senthil Balaji and AIADMK candidates and Transport Minister MR Vijayabaskar clashed in the street of the Mavadian temple soon after the election campaign came to a close. A group of DMK men who reached Mavadian Temple Street had allegedly objected to the men of AIADMK and continued their campaign under the leadership of Shri Vijayabhaskar even after the deadline. The men of AIADMK reportedly stated that they were returning home after ending their campaign in a vehicle with a speaker. However, after the objection, Sri Vijayabhaskar later left the region. The DMK men, who insisted all AIADMK men move away from the spot, were allegedly attacked and stone pelted with wooden logs, injuring sixteen people.
He was treated in hospitals. The three DMK cadres were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital.
Armed policemen brought the situation under control. Security was tightened in various parts of the constituency.
Later, Mr. Vijayabaskar learned about the injured in hospitals. He said that Mr. Senthil Balaji could not feed the growing support for him, and was trying to create law and order issues with a retrospective motive to create a position to contest elections in Karur constituency.
