While the DMK manifesto is silent on prohibition, its ally, Congress has come up with detailed plans for total prohibition. In its Assembly election manifesto released by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Chairman KS Alagiri on Tuesday, the party has also promised a separate ministry for prohibition of liquor.
The manifesto released stated that the Congress followed an uncompromising position on prohibition of liquor, as long as it was in power in Tamil Nadu (until 1967).
The prohibition was in force when the revenue of the state. Was less than 100 crores. Since the revenue has gone up to ₹ 1.33 lakh crore, there is no hesitation in implementing the prohibition now, ”the declaration said.
The Congress party proposed to set up a committee of experts and officials to study ways to compensate for the losses arising from the closure of liquor shops. “Until the total prohibition is announced, the number of stores will be closed in a phased manner.”
In addition to establishing de-addiction centers at the taluk level to treat withdrawal symptoms, the manifesto promised to take action against village administrative officers, police officers and panchayat presidents for illegal drinking in a particular village.
Temples
Like the DMK, the Congress also announced several schemes for temples managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Settlements (HR&CE) department. The manifesto stated, “A survey will be conducted to obtain details about the lands and buildings of the temples and encroachers.”
The Congress also promised to involve officials and representatives of local bodies to prevent and monitor the smuggling of temple idols and encroachment of temple properties.
“The Annadhan Yojana will be extended to benefit more devotees. Priests from all communities, who are trained in Agama, will be appointed archaks.
Alleging that the sale of rice for distribution through ration shops was being sold in the black-market, as those who opted for the rice-card were not buying it, the Congress said that the ration Cards will be regulated.
“If the head of the family is attaining the age of old age, then the ration item will be given directly to the family,” it said.
NEET
The manifesto stated that it would not accept the National Editing Policy (NEP) 2020 and promised to set up training centers for rural students to crack NEET by the end of the exam.
“Reservation for rural students in medical education will be increased from 7.5% to 10%. Education loans borrowed by December 2020 will be forgiven.
The TNCC president also revealed plans to train rural students for three years so that they can improve their skills to pass the civil service examinations.
Taking a hint from private cab aggregator apps like Ola and Uber, Mr. Alagiri said that a similar app would be created by the government to help auto rickshaw drivers.
Asked about the party’s stand on the demand for the release of seven life convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, he said that the party is different from the DMK on the issue.
