  • Delay in smart city works on verge of top Vellore

Delay in smart city works on verge of top Vellore

Roads dug, difficulty in accessing public transport are among the other major concerns of residents

Although Vellore has easily ranked sixth among the cities with less than one lakh population in the Living Index, its residents still believe that there is still a long way to go. Delay in completion of smart city works, dug up roads and danger of mosquitoes are their main grievances.

The Vellore Assembly constituency, with 2.5 lakh voters, has traditionally been a stronghold of the DMK. Party candidate P. Karthikeyan won the 2016 election over AIADMK’s Aaron Rashid by a margin of 26,411 votes.

In the 2019 Vellore parliamentary constituency elections, it was reported that money power was being used to influence voters. Therefore, the Election Commission of India has ordered that the constituencies of the district should be closely monitored to ensure the elections to be held next month.

“Vellore votes have not been communally decided. The DMK traditionally has an edge in this constituency, and there are a lot of unorganized workers, including beedi sellers and autorickshaw drivers, who may vote for the DMK in the wake of an alliance with Communist parties, “S. Dayanidhi, District Secretary, CPI (M). Shri Dayanidhi said that delay in execution of smart city projects would be a major drawback for AIADMK at this time. “Nothing is happening on the ground. It is not clear whether a committee was formed to review the works. Roads have been dug everywhere, ”he said.

“Smart city work has been going on for many years. Roads in many parts of the constituency have been dug as part of smart city and underground sewage projects. However, in some places work has not been completed, roads have not been remodeled.

    traffic problems

This resulted in worsening traffic conditions. “This can be felt in Green Signal, Anna Salai and Velappadi. We need a solution. Only now, they are laying sidewalks in the area, resulting in pedestrians not having room to walk. It also has encroachments.

Residents are also angry about the difficulties in accessing public transport. A new bus stand is being built under the Smart City Project.

“Buses to Chennai and Kanchipuram stop at the new bus stand, while those to Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Bengaluru stop at the old bus stand. Buses for Andhra Pradesh, Cuddalore and Villupuram stop at Makkan signal. Therefore, we have to go to different places for buses at different places. The new bus stand is to be constructed soon.

Mount View Apartment Residents Welfare Association Secretary R. Ponnarasi said that although the municipal corporation was doing a good job, the authorities should abandon the waterbody for effective water management. He said, “There are lakes like Sadupu Eri, Kazinjur Lake, Oteri and others. If they had drowned, a lot of water could have been saved.

Mr. Baradeshwaran suggested that after eliminating the waterlogging, the corporation could build a walker park in its vicinity. “It would be very helpful. In addition, there were plans to improve the moat around the Vellore Fort and start boating. But nothing has happened in that regard.
