DMK President MK Stalin said on Sunday that India should vote in favor of the UN resolution against Sri Lanka for its war crimes and human rights violations on 22 March.
In a statement in Chennai, Mr. Stalin sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention to gather the support of other member states and ensure the adoption of the resolution with sufficient amendments.
‘take a stand’
“I urge the Prime Minister not to take a stand against the UN resolution,” he said.
Recalling the interview of Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary Jayanath Katez that India has assured support to his country, Mr. Stalin said that Mr. Modi’s silence and his failure to clarify his position has given a shock to Sri Lankan Tamils.
“Even though External Affairs Minister Jaishankar visited Sri Lanka and Mr. Modi held a telephonic conversation with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, it is unclear what happened during the deliberations on the UN resolution. There is no indication that these negotiations considered the proposal, ”said the DMK president.
He said, ‘It is a matter of great concern and anguish that the BJP government has decided to put the Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary on India’s side. The nine crore Tamils living around the world did not condone any attempt to betray the interests of Sri Lankan Tamils.
