The starting lineup for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway was set by applying the statistical formula NASCAR has been using for most of its 2021 race.
The starting positions of the drivers for the Instacart 500 (3:30 pm ET; Fox, MRN, SeriousXM NASCAR Radio) were based on four factors:
- Driver’s finishing position from last race (25 percent)
- Car owner’s finishing position from last race (25 percent)
- Team owner ranking (35 percent)
- Fastest lap from the previous race (15 percent)
Below is the starting lineup for Sunday’s NASCAR race at the 1-mile track in Phoenix and how it was set without qualification.

Who won the poll for the NASCAR race in Phoenix?
Brad Keselowski will climb the pole following his performance last weekend in Las Vegas. He finished second in the Penzil 400 after Kyle Larson and won Stage 1 of the race. Keselowski is second in the Cup Series point standings, but he is just two points ahead of Larsen, who is in third place.
Larsen would line up outside Keselowski in Sunday’s first line. ()Update: Larsen would have to leave behind for a fast interval as his car failed a two prerese technique inspection on Saturday. William Byron and Cody Ware will also have to go backwards because their cars failed two inspections.)
Joe Gibbs Racing partners Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell and Martin Truex Jr. will finish third, fourth and fifth respectively. Hamlin leads the point standings with three top-fives, three stage wins and 150 laps, all series heights in the first four races.

The starting lineup for Sunday’s race in Phoenix was determined through NASCAR, a mathematical formula that was adopted late in the 2020 season. The same process is being used for the majority race in 2021 to establish lineups without qualification.
