A few days before the start of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021), two more ground-staff members of the Wankhede Stadium and a plumber have tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. Sources in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed the development on Tuesday. It is also learned that to safely conduct the IPL in Wankhede, ground-staff members will not travel and will remain in the stadium.
MCA source told ANI on Tuesday, “Two more ground-staff members and one plumber returned with a positive COVID-19 result on Monday. Earlier, 10 ground-staff members conducted a positive test for COVID at Wankhede.”
“There is a club house inside the Wankhede Stadium, all ground-staff will remain there till the Mumbai-leg is over to run the IPL smoothly,” the source said.
Last week, several Wankhede grounds-staff members returned with a positive COVID-19 report and as a result some franchises were sweated over the fact.
Speaking to ANI, an officer of one of the franchisees – currently based in Mumbai – said it changes the situation and calls for strict protocols.
“You get a little worried when you hear these kinds of things a few days before the tournament starts. We are following protocol for all the core, but obviously, when any such news comes, it gives us A little cautious. We’re watching. ” Officials said that to keep things more and more agile.
RCB’s Devdutt Padikkal, Delhi capitals Axar Patel and KKR’s Nitish Rana are the three players who have tested positive for COVID-19. However, Rana has recovered now and has also started training with the KKR team.
On Sunday, the Maharashtra government announced a weekend lockout from 8 am to 7 am Monday to curb the spread of COVID-19, but BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had confirmed that the IPL would be as per schedule. And there will be no change.
“Everything will go ahead as per schedule,” Ganguly told ANI.

Wankhede Stadium is set to host 10 IPL games this season from 10-25 April. The first match at the Mumbai Stadium is to be played between the Delhi capital and Chennai Super Kings on 10 April.
Four franchises – Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals have established their base in Mumbai.
