The Bharatiya Janata Party and its ally United People’s Party Liberals (UPPL) have followed the two major constituents of the opposition Mahajot or Mahagathbandhan to join the “friendly fight” in the upcoming assembly elections.
List of UPPL candidates
UPPL has announced the list of candidates for 11 seats in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). In the first week of March, the seat-sharing agreement gave eight seats to the BTR-specific party.
The BTR’s 12 assembly seats are in four districts – Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar and Udalguri – administered by the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).
On Tuesday, UPPL President and BTC chief Pramod Boro announced the names of the eight candidates. He had earlier announced the names of candidates for three other seats.
It is now believed that BJP and UPPL will contest in three of these seats – Bijni, Kaligaon and Majbat.
The candidates are Phanin Boro, Kamal Azad and Ratendra Dimri respectively.
BJP has fielded Ajay Kumar Roy from Bijni, Madhu Ram Deka from Kalgaon and Jeetu Kisan from Majit.
Paneri seat
The only seat in the BTR that is not contesting UPPL is Paneri, where the BJP has fielded Rajya Sabha member Biswajit Dimari, an import from Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), a former ally of the saffron party.
UPPL has fielded former MP and Sahitya Academy Award winner Urkha Gov. Brahma from Chapaguri seat.
The Congress and ally All India United Democratic Front had earlier named candidates against each other for a “friendly fight” in the five constituencies.
