Apple launches iPhone 12 assembly in India

Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron, a third supplier, together have done a business of about $ 900 million over five years to manufacture iPhones in India, leveraging New Delhi’s $ 6.7 billion plan to boost smartphone exports.

The US Inc giant said that Apple Inc has begun assembly of the iPhone 12 in India, as the company accelerates manufacturing operations in the world’s second-largest smartphone market.

“We are proud to start production of the iPhone 12 in India for our local customers,” said in a statement on Thursday, making the smartphone without naming the supplier.

The Indian unit of Apple’s Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn assembled the device at its plant in southern Tamil Nadu state, which would be said to be from two sources familiar with the matter.

Foxconn did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but has previously said it does not comment on client-specific work.

Apple is relocating some areas of production from China to other markets as it conducts a trade war between Washington and Beijing. In November, a person familiar with the matter said that Foxconn was taking some iPad and MacBook assemblies from China to Vietnam at its request.

The Cupertino, California-headquartered Apple bets big on India as it begins iPhone assembly in the country in 2017 through another Taiwanese supplier, Vistron.

Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron, a third supplier, have raised nearly $ 900 million over five years to manufacture iPhones in India, leveraging New Delhi’s $ 6.7 billion plan to boost smartphone exports.

Apple also plans to bring its iPad tablet assembly to India, Reuters reported last month.

India’s Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted after news of iPhone 12 production in India, “Seeing our efforts to make India a bigger hub for mobile and components manufacturing is attracting global appeal.”

“This will create a large number of jobs.”
