Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple, spoke recently on the topic of the Right to Repair on Apple gadgets by consumers, after a request from Louis Rossman, an advocate of the Right to Repair initiative. The tech innovator was in favour of the same and said that it was time to recognise the Right to Repair fully.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Right to Repair, it is about the right of the consumer to disassemble an electronic device by themselves. Apple doesn’t advocate that and has always been against the notion, and has stated reasons like the danger to the safety of the consumer and the device both while trying to repair them. Apple critics, however, are of the opinion that with this view, the company’s aim is to sell more products even when the older ones with the consumers could run longer after some self-repair.
Wozniak says in the video, “We wouldn’t have had an Apple had I not grown up in a very open technology world. Back then, when you bought electronic things like TVs and radios, every bit of the circuits and designs were included on the paper. Total open source.”
He also added, “Is it your computer [as the customer]? or is it some company’s computer? Think about that. It’s time to start doing the right thing.”

Apple, in its legal documents related to repair of products, has made it clear that “If service is needed due to failure of parts that are not original to the product or due to damage caused by abuse, misuse or any external cause, Apple reserves the right to return the product to you without servicing it, and may hold you responsible for any indicated diagnostic fee. Apple will not be responsible for any damage to the product that occurs during the repair process that is a result of any unauthorized modifications or repairs or replacements not performed by Apple or an AASP.”
