The ruling AIADMK, in its election manifesto, has assurances that it will pressurize the Center to withdraw the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which last year, noting that any attempt to get a resolution adopted in the Legislative Assembly against the law Has been successfully canceled.
In February 2020, Chief Minister Edappadi K., accusing the DMK of misleading people about the CAA. Palaniswami while addressing the opposition in the assembly said, “Which minority [community] Those living in Tamil Nadu and born in Tamil land are affected [by the CAA]. We will answer it. ”
Speaking in Virudhunagar a few weeks later, the Chief Minister reiterated that his government will protect all the people of the state, irrespective of their caste, creed and community. Also, he appealed to Muslims, especially women, not to resort to agitation against the law.
A U-Turn?
In mid-March, Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar made it clear in the Assembly that no resolution could be passed by the House against an Act of Parliament.
Against this backdrop, the party’s reference to the CAA has led many to wonder whether the AIADMK has taken a U-turn on the issue.
Saying that there has been no change in the position of his party, the convenor of the manifesto drafting committee, c. Ponnayan and the former finance minister said that the Chief Minister made it clear, even at the height of the dispute, the state government would not allow this to happen. Minorities, especially Muslims, are harmed by the Act. Mr Ponnayan claimed that the government had stated its position to the Center in writing, and “had also sent a reminder”.
Indicating that there is “no contradiction” in the AIADMK’s stance, Secretary of the party’s minority wing and member of the manifesto drafting committee, A.K. Anwara Razaha said that the manifesto only reflected the Chief Minister’s earlier assurance on the matter.
