A special court of Central Crime Branch (CCB) cases in Egmore has convicted a person from West Bengal for cheating senior advocate and former advocate general PS Raman. The convicted person was sentenced to five months imprisonment.
According to the police, on 4 September, the complainant, Raman, alleged that he received a WhatsApp message from an unknown person claiming that he was the son of a Supreme Court judge, New Delhi and was himself a lawyer. As he was in Chennai for some official work, he said that he needed some cash for his personal expenses. Assuming it to be genuine, the complainant contacted the anonymous caller and responded. The caller asked for ₹ 20,000 for his personal expenses and promised to return the amount when he reached New Delhi.
Later, the complainant realized that he was targeted by a fraudster. He filed a complaint with the City Police Commissioner and a case was registered under Section 66D (Punishment for cheating a person using computer resources) in the Cyber Crime Cell, CCB. Technology Act.
During the investigation, the unidentified caller was identified as Aparajit Basak, a 54 resident of West Bengal. A special team arrested the accused in September and took him on remand. After collection of documents and examination of witnesses, the charge sheet was filed within 45 days and the trial was held in CCB special court, Egmore. The court found Aparajit Basak guilty of the offense under the provisions of the Information Technology Act and ordered him to undergo five months of simple imprisonment.
