Madras HC does not ask to complete physical hearing from Monday due to upsurge in COVID-19 cases

The Madras High Court has decided to conduct its proceedings only through a virtual or hybrid (part physical and part virtual) mode from Monday in view of the recent increase of COVID-19 cases in Chennai and parts of the state. According to a notification issued by the Registrar General, the decision has been taken as a precautionary measure and to ensure a safe working environment.

The notification issued on Saturday said that Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee has ordered that all the judges will hear the cases in the main seat of the High Court as well as those in the Madurai Bench through a completely virtual mode that both government lawyers and private lawyers Will appear through Through video conference or hybrid mode where government lawyers will appear in physical court alone.

The current practice of some judges conducting their court proceedings only through physical mode will be stopped.

Law officers and solicitors alone will be allowed inside the court premises. “Entry of all other advocates, advocates clerks, litigants and parties has been prohibited inside the High Court from 8 March. All law rooms will remain closed from 8 March. Lawyers who want to get the case papers can do so on 6 March and 7 March, “C. The notification issued by Kumarappan was read.

It was also stated that special counters would be set up inside the court for filing case papers, order copies and for receipt of order copies. Case papers may be filed, and order copies may be obtained from those who are subject to strict adherence to the COVID-19 protocol.
