The six-month-old Assam Janata Parishad (AJP) has named its president Lurinjyoti Gogoi as the party’s candidate for Duliajan assembly constituency in eastern Assam.

Its general secretary Jagdish Bhuyan, who left the BJP under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in December 2019, will contest from Sadiya, where the Brahmaputra begins.

The AJP was launched in September 2020 by members of the influential Assam student union, of which Mr. Gogoi was the general secretary, and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad. He refused to comment on the idea of ​​a jailed worker saying that many opposition coalitions would help the BJP and its allies retain power in Assam. “We cannot comment on the views of any other party or person. We do not feel so weak, ”he said.

Apart from Duliajan and Sadia, the AJP will contest from Sarupathar, Dhemaji, Khumtai, Dhekiajuli, Rangpara, Dhing, Batadrav, Dergaon, Nazira, Thora, Bihoria, Dibrugarh, Mariani, Tinsukia, Dhakukhana and Margherita.

Friendly fight

The second major party led by the Congress is the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Mazahot Or the Grand Alliance said that it will contest 24 seats. The party will contest independents in 21 seats, and will have a friendly fight with coalition partners in three.

The Congress and the Bodoland People’s Front, which are seeking at least 12 seats, are yet to announce their candidates.
