Apple rarely gives an exact date for its iOS upgrades but we know for sure that iOS 15.1 will be pushed out to iPhones in a matter of days. The reason we can be so confident about the timing of this release is that Apple recently announced the launch of its new AirPods which arrive in stores from Tuesday, October 26 and are only compatible with iPhones running iOS 15.1.
That suggests that this upgrade will be made available in the coming hours with some experts suggesting that Monday, October 25 will be the date when this software is released.
Along with that AirPods compatibility, there’s plenty of other treats packed inside this release including the long-awaited SharePlay option.
This feature was first announced back in June during Apple’s WWDC Developers Conference with it letting anyone share their music or video with friends and family on a FaceTime call. Playback is synced across everyone’s devices, so friends can add new songs to a queue or skip a bad choice on everyone’s iPhone or iPad. Disney+, TikTok, and a number of other streaming apps have already committed to implementing the feature.
You’ll also be able to share what is happening on your screen.
As well as SharePlay finally getting an official release, iOS 15 also includes some upgrades to the camera on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max with these devices getting the ability to shoot videos in the ProRes format.
This upgrade will be great for any budding Speibergs out there with ProRes offering an advanced video codec that is used widely as the final delivery format for commercials, feature films, and broadcasts, to offer higher colour fidelity and less compression.
Apple is boasting that iPhone 13 Pro is the only smartphone in the world to provide an end-to-end workflow — capture, edit, and share in Dolby Vision or ProRes.
Another change to the 13 Pro models in iOS 15.1 is the ability to toggle the new Macro mode on or off. Right now, the iPhone changes automatically when you get up close to a subject when using the triple-lens camera but that will change with users able to get full manual control of this function.
One final feature that’s worth a mention is that, with iOS 15, you’ll be able to securely store verifiable versions of your COVID-19 test results and immunisation records in the Health app on your iPhone or iPod touch.
Apple says test results or immunisation records downloaded in this verifiable format are digitally signed by a vaccine or test result provider. This is similar to providing paper documents with an official seal.
If any of that sounds exciting then expect to see iOS 15.1 arrive on your device tomorrow.
To download and install iOS 15.1 simply head to Settings > General > Software Update.
