Why isn’t Harry and Meghan’s son a prince?

One of the most dramatic claims in Prince Harry and Meghan’s interviews with Oprah Winfrey was the allegation that her son was denied a royal title, possibly because of his skin color.

Harry and Meghan’s son, seventh to the British throne, is Archie Mountbatten-Windsor. In contrast, Harry’s older brother, Prince William, has children as Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Meghan said that when she was pregnant “they” – presumably Mahal – “were saying they did not want to make her a prince, which would be different from protocol.”

He said that it “cannot be titled to the first member of color in this family in the same way as other grandchildren would.”

Was Archie sniffed?

Queen Elizabeth II has nine great-grandchildren, including Archie. He is not a prince and a prince, apart from Prince William’s three children, who are second in line to the throne and want to be king one day.

A decree issued by King George V in 1917 limited the title of Prince and Shehzade’s children, the Emperor’s sons, and “the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales” – Prince William, son of William George.

Bob Morris, from the Constitution Unit at University College London, said the regime was designed to reduce the increasing number of royal titles.

“Queen Victoria had nine children who were all princes and princesses, and then her children and further children, and George V took the idea … that something needed to be done to correct the situation,” he said .

The queen has the power to amend the rules, and in 2012 she decided that all the children of Prince William and his wife Catherine, not just the eldest, would be prince and prince.

In her interview, Meghan said she was told that “they want to change the convention for Archie.” It is unclear what she was referring to, but Morris said that Prince Charles is known to “favor a small royal family” when he takes the throne.

Archie deserved a “courtesy title” at birth, such as Lord Archie Mountbatten-Windsor. At the time, it was reported that Harry and Meghan had chosen not to give him the title. But Meghan told Winfrey that “it was not our decision.”

Does the title affect Archie’s safety?

Meghan expressed concern that without a title, Archie was “not going to get protection.” But royal titles such as prince or princess do not automatically bring security protections. Full-time working royals – including Meghan and Harry – receive taxpayer-funded police outposts before relocating to North America last year. Buckingham Palace has not responded to specific allegations in the interview. In a statement, it said that “the issues raised, particularly those concerning race, are related. Although some memories may be different, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed privately by the family.”
