NBA All-Star Game Format, Explained

Team LeBron and Team Durant will compete to win each of the first three quarters of the game. Those quarters will be the standard 12 minutes but start with a score of 0–0. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the game clock would be switched off and a final goal score would be determined based on the leading team’s cumulative score through the first three quarters. That goal score would be the team’s total score plus 24 points.

The NBA decided to include 24 points in the goal score to honor Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020. The 18-time All-Star wore number 24 from the 2006–07 season to 2015 – 14.

Once the target score is final, Team LeBron and Team Durant will play the fourth quarter without playing, and the first team to reach the target score will win the game.

An example: if the cumulative score over the three quarters in favor of Team Lebron is 100–95, the target score would be 124. Team LeBron would have to score only 24 points to win, while Team Durant would have to score 29 points. The results of the last three quarters are simply based on the individual scores of those quarters.

The winner of each of the first three quarters will receive $ 150,000 ($ 450,000 in total) for an organization that provides scholarship funds for students attending historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The total winning team will earn $ 300,000.

Team Lebron will play for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and Team Durant will play for the United Negro College Fund. Each organization will receive an initial contribution of $ 500,000, and a total of $ 1.75 million spread between the two.
