Watch out Apple! Nokia launches budget iPad rival with a price that’s tough to believe

If splashing out over £310 on a new iPad sounds a bit rich then Nokia may have the answer. The famous phone firm, which is now owned by HMD Global, has announced the launch of a new tablet which can be yours for as little as £179.99 – that’s over £120 cheaper than the iPad and £400 less than the iPad Air!

Despite that low price, the Nokia T20 packs some pretty impressive features including a sandblasted aluminium design, toughened glass and 10.4-inch 2K display with a mode called “Brightness Boost” which – as the name suggests – helps use the device in the great outdoors.

When settling down for a boxset binge, there are stereo speakers for improved audio and you get Nokia’s OZO Playback technology which brings some added clarity and richness to the sound.

If you’re heading away on a long journey you’ll find a large 8200mAh battery tucked under the hood which offers around 15-hours of playtime and fast charging allows it to get a quick refill when things run low.

Other features worth a mention include a single rear 8MP camera with flash for night shots and there’s a front-facing 5MP selfie snapper which can also check your face and unlock the screen if it recognises you.

Unlike the iPad – which users Apple’s iOS software – the T20 is powered by Android 11 with Nokia promising two years of free upgrades to help keep things up to date.

One final addition that’s worth a mention will certainly please anyone thinking of buying this device for their kids.

Nokia says it has included something called Google Kids Space which allows parents to take full control of the device and monitor what is being downloaded and installed.

This option also creates a safe area for the younger members of the household with only age appropriate apps and content available to view.

Speaking about the device, Florian Seiche, CEO, HMD Global revealed: “We pride ourselves on always listening and responding to people’s wishes. Over the past year, we noticed the increase in hybrid working and online learning, as well as the growing use of social media, video calling platforms and streaming services – leading to an increase in the appetite for tablets, which grew an impressive 53% in Q1 from 2020 to 20211. So, we created HMD Global’s first-ever Nokia tablet to address people’s changing needs and their desire for versatile technology and features. Designed for work, learning and play, our Nokia T20 offers the classic qualities people have come to love and expect from our smartphones, in a brand- new format.”

If that all sounds exciting then the Nokia T20 is available to pre-order from today in Ocean Blue.

It arrives with 64GB of storge with the Wi-Fi-only model costing £179.99 and the Wi-Fi and LTE version setting you back £199.99.
