Voters push polite cycle into big leagues

With rising air pollution and skyrocketing fuel prices, many people across the state have taken up bicycles. However, poor facilities and safety concerns prevent many from walking on busy city streets.

Now, bicycle mayors across the state have submitted a bicycle manifesto to all political parties before the assembly elections. “Most demands are not just for ease of cycling, but for safer roads in general,” said Kozhikode Cycle Mayor Sahir Abdul Jabbar.

car Free Day

Some of the key demands include car-free days every week; Roads should be left for cyclists and pedestrians in at least one district on Sunday; Cycle tracks in every district are probably near beaches and well connected to main roads; 1 / 10th of the available parking space for bicycles; And bicycle lanes in all newly constructed roads.

To promote bicycles among the public, they want governments to promote electric bicycles / scooters, workshop in schools, bicycle advance to government employees and bicycle maintenance allowance. To increase safety, they suggest more colorful road signs, especially at weaker junctions, more automotive-free zones / pedestrian spaces and safe road crossing facilities for cyclists at traffic signs. More CCTVs have also been suggested to prevent traffic violence and abuse towards cyclists.

“By cycling more we can check air pollution to a great extent. This is necessary to build a healthy society that is also close to nature, ”said Mr. Jabbar, adding that Kerala, being ahead of other states in many areas, could also set a model in it.
