One of the fastest rising stars in boxing, the former world champion will undergo his subtle tests when Vergil Ortiz Jr. puts his undefeated record on the line against former junior welterweight champion Maurice Hooker on Saturday at the Dickena Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Ortiz has demonstrated tremendous maturity to go with his incredible power as he is knocking with all 16 of his wins with a 16–0 record. Although he has won over the likes of Mauricio Herrera and Samuel Vargas, Ortiz has yet to face an opponent Mighty Moe’s caliber.
Hooker (27-1-3) returns to the ring after 15 months of layoffs. He was about to face Regis Progressis at a catchweight of 143 pounds last year, but opted against it and will move on as a legal move for 147 pounds. The former WBO champion lost his title by knockout Jose Ramirez in a July 2019 performance, but returned with a first-round knockout of unheralded Eurail Perez before stepping into the vet.
With two fighters representing Texas jockeys for position in the stacked welterweight division, they will turn to each other with the winner, becoming a key player in the division while the loser falls behind the line.
