US U-23s collapsed in yet another Olympic qualifying disaster

For the third consecutive cycle, the US Under-23 men’s national team has failed to qualify for the Olympics.

The US were eliminated from CONCACAF’s Olympic qualifying tournament in the semifinal round as they lost 2–1 to Honduras.

With this loss, the US will not move to Tokyo this summer, while Honduras will head the Olympic Games for the fourth consecutive time.

Another nightmare

Not for the Olympics since the 2008 Games, After qualifying in the Olympics, once again America was left, then America was heartbroken.

After a lackluster start, the US conceded a terrific goal with Honduras’ Juan Carlos Obragon Jr. just before the halftime whistle and kept the opener home for four minutes in stoppage time of the first half.

After that, within a few moments of the second half, Honduras had a second place, with American goalkeeper David Ochoa dodging the ball from Luis Palma of Honduras while trying to play back into the back of his own net.

The US later found a goal moments later, with Captain Jackson Yuil firing the missile right out of the box, but it would not be enough for the US to avoid yet another worthy failure.

Look back

The US has now fallen short of qualifying in each of the last three cycles, leading to their last Olympic performance in 2008.

In 2012, the US failed to make it out of the group stage, finishing behind Canada and El Salvador after a disastrous game of three.

Three years later, as he aimed to qualify for the 2016 Games, the US looked well on their way to winning all three of their group stage games by a margin of +11 goals.

However, the semi-finals were contested with Honduras, the US were beaten 2–0 and then completely out of contention as they lost to Colombia in an intercontinental playoff.
