Madras University has proposed to introduce online educational programs in an effort to integrate digital learning with traditional teaching.
The university will sign a memorandum with the Educational Communications (CEC), an autonomous body in the University Grants Commission, to develop the programs.
The agreement will make the university an affiliated member of the CEC, a nodal agency that uses various communication mediums for educational programs.
University officials said CEC was one of the largest repositories of digitized educational content in the country and was also the national coordinator for large-scale open online courses (MOOCs) for the swipe platform. CEC oversees Swabha Prabha DTH channels, which offer 11 educational channels in various disciplines.
Under the agreement, the university will develop credit-based courses offered through the MOOC. This will speed up the process of developing e-learning programs and encourage academics and teachers to create digital content for the CEC platform.
The university will also use open educational resources with CEC to develop in-demand curricula. CEC, New Delhi, and the universities will provide jointly grouped MOOCs, certifying diploma courses in the emerging fields in humanities, social sciences, management, and computer science.
Madras University will co-host digital content and e-learning programs will be distributed through its own learning management systems. Students will be awarded joint certificates and credits will be transferred to the students’ parent institutions.
The Chancellor of the University of Madras on Monday S. Gauri and CEC director Jagat Bhushan Nadda will sign the agreement in the presence of senior officials of both organizations.
