Two soldiers drowned after entering a pond near Kalamassery and entering the boundary of Choianikkara Panchayat at around 6 pm on Friday evening.
The deceased were identified as Fardeen and Abdul Rahman, both eighth grade students from Kunnathri, Aluva. Both knew to swim but were probably trapped in underwater mud and wild growth. When the two did not emerge on the surface for a while, panicked friends sought the help of the locals.
Abdul Rahman was first ejected, followed by Fardeen about 10 minutes later. Although he was taken to the hospital, he could not be saved.
