Mr. Joseph, who is also a former minister, represents Thodupuzha constituency in Idukki district and Mr. Mons Kaduthuruthi assembly constituency in Kottayam district.

The resignation before the deadline for filing nominations for the Kerala Assembly elections to be held on 6 April, which ended on Friday, is learned to avoid rejection of nomination during scrutiny and disqualification. The faction led by Mr. Joseph was merged into PC Thomas’s Kerala Congress (Thomas) party on Wednesday. Mr. Joseph and his trusted lieutenant, who are re-contesting the UDF seats, submitted their resignations on the basis of legal opinion.

The Joseph faction faced the possibility of contesting without a general election symbol after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal on The Two Leaves’ election symbol. Mr. Joseph quickly overcame the crisis by merging his faction with the Kerala Congress (Thomas) Party. The UDF gave Joseph faction 10 seats to contest this time.
