The baseball world expressed shock and sadness to learn that Twins Bench coach Mike Bell suffered from kidney cancer at the age of 46 on Friday.
Bell was part of a three-generation baseball family: He, Grandpa Gus, Dad Buddy, and brother David all played in the majors. Mike Bell spent close to three decades in sports as a player, executive, manager and coach. He joined Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli’s staff last season.
Three organizations with direct connections to Mike Bell paid tribute.
“The Minnesota Twins are devastated by the loss of Mike Bell,” the team said in its statement. “In his short time with our club, Mike had a positive impact – not only on the quality of our team on the field, but most importantly, meeting everyone who respected us all in our game, Who knew Mike. Off the field, better for the experience. “
Minnesota decided to go ahead with their scheduled exhibition against the Braves on Friday night.
The Diamondbacks selected Bell in the 1997 expansion draft, but traded him to the Mets in February 1998. Bell joined the organization after the end of his playing career and served as the director of player development, working for the franchise for 13 years.
The Reds and Bells have a close bond with the family. David Bell is the current manager of the team and Buddy Bell is the vice president of the Reds. Gus, Buddy and Mike Bell all played for the club.
“This great family has blessed thousands of people over 70 years who are dedicated to our sport,” Reds CEO Bob Castellini said in a statement. “We are honored that Mike, like his grandfather Jesus, his father Buddy and brother David, wore a Reds uniform.”
