A smuggler who was hit by a train near Valayar in Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Monday died without responding to treatment in the early hours of Wednesday.
The 25-year-old elephant was undergoing treatment at the Chadivayal Elephant Camp of the Forest Department since Tuesday morning. He suffered several injuries after the Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Express crashed around 1.30 am on Monday morning. It was pulled by a train for about 100 meters along the track.
According to forest department sources, on Wednesday evening, his condition worsened and he died around 10 pm.
Female elephant found dead
Meanwhile, a female elephant was found dead on Tuesday evening in the Pethikutai reserved forest area of Sirumugai Forest Range of Coimbatore Forest Division.
The corpse was spotted by a field staff who went on a patrol in the Mylmokkai area of the Reserve Forest.
Forest Veterinary Officer of Sirumugai a. Sukumar and Assistant Veterinarian Officer c. Thiagarajan, who performed the post-mortem on Wednesday, said that the elephant could die of unknown anemia and stop the heart rate.
Deaths so far
With this, the number of elephant deaths in the Coimbatore Forest Division rose to five this year. While a smuggler’s electric wire was broken at a farm in Semedu in the Boluvampatti forest range on 5 January, a female elephant was found dead in Pethikutai on 28 January.
Another female elephant was found dead in Kempanpur on Monday.
Apart from these, on Monday, a smuggler was found dead at Kakarakal in Valparai forest range of Anamalai Tiger Reserve.
