A member of El Salvador’s national surfing team died on Friday when he was struck by light during training, the country’s National Institute of Sports (INDES) confirmed. The local press reported that 22-year-old Catherine Diaz was stepping out of the water on El Tunco beach, overlooking the Pacific in the southwest of the country.
Diaz was preparing to represent the country at the upcoming international surfing tournament, and was also a member of the Salvadoran Surf Federation.
IDES chief Yamil Bukale paid tribute to Diaz on Twitter, saying he deeply regretted losing “solidarity” with his friends and family and “solidarity”.
