Tokyo Games: India’s Olympic-bound Archer to get his next dose of COVID-19 vaccine next week

Olympic Games Indian archers, who are at the Army Sports Institute, will receive a second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine next week before leaving for the upcoming World Cup Phase I in Guatemala City. The World Cup Phase I, to be held from 19 April, will be the first tournament for senior archers in the COVID era. The archers will compete in three World Cups with Olympic qualification for the third time before the Tokyo Games in July. As part of their vaccination campaign, ASI vaccinated all the archers, including eight frontline Indians – Atanu Das, Tarundeep Rai, Praveen Jadhav and B. Dheeraj (Reserve) in men and Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat, Komalika Bari and Madhu Vedwan (Reserve) in women.

“He is given the first dose of Kovild on March 8 while the second is due next week (on April 7),” an ASI official told PTI.

The first dose of vaccine has been given to everyone in the 16-member senior Indian contingent, including coaches and support staff.

“This is a part of our vaccination campaign at ASI. We do not want to compromise on security. We have also included 29 Army archers – 20 in recurve and nine in mixed sections,” he said.

So far, India has achieved a team quota in the men’s category, and an individual quota in the women’s category. The women’s team will have one last chance to qualify for the third leg of the World Cup to be held in Paris from 21-27 June.

Archery Association of India Secretary Pramod Chandurkar said that meanwhile, both senior and sub-junior citizens to be held at Chittaranjan and Raipur have been adjourned respectively.

The railways have been allocated to senior citizens, but due to state elections and rising COVID-19 cases, they will now have to look for an alternative site.

Chandurkar said, “Some places, including Kolkata, are in the pipeline. This is a call from the railways.”

“The sub-junior event was slowed down in April, but with the spike in COVID-19 cases, we may have to wait and watch for two-three months,” he said.
