The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed three special observers for the upcoming assembly elections in the state. They are in addition to general, expenditure and police supervisors posted in the district and the constituency, according to Chief Electoral Officer Tikha Ram Meena.
Former IAS officer J. Ramakrishna Rao has been appointed as Special General Supervisor. Deepak Mishra, a former IPS officer, special police supervisor and IRS officer, Pushpinder Singh Puniha, is the special expenditure supervisor.
Mr. Mishra and Mr. Singh have arrived in the state. He held discussions with Mr. Meena, Chief Secretary VP Joy and State Police Chief Loknath Behera. In the coming days, special observers will visit various districts to assess the ground situation.
In the first phase, they will go to Kasaragod, Kannur, Malappuram and Kozhikode. They will hold meetings with District Election Officers and supervisors appointed in these districts and ensure that elections are conducted in a free and fair environment.
Supervisors have also been deployed in the district and the constituency to oversee the election process. In all, there are 70 general supervisors, 20 police supervisors and 40 expenditure supervisors. A spending supervisor has been specially posted for the Lok Sabha by-election in Malappuram.
