A supporter of the former minister was caught giving cash to women during the election campaign.
The Natham police on Wednesday accused AIADMK candidate Natham R. of giving cash to vote during his assembly election campaign. A case has been registered against Viswanathan.
The former minister, who is contesting the Legislative Assembly elections for the fifth time, started his campaign in Mullaiyur Panchayat and its adjoining areas on Monday. When he was given a reception by the women, one of his supporters was caught giving cash money to the women who took ‘Aarti’ at Katuveltanpatti. The candidate was also videographed as he was trying to get cash from his pocket in another village.
When the video went viral on social media, the DMK and other opposition parties objected and accused Election Commission officials of favoring the AIADMK.
Following a complaint by the Election Wing’s video team, the Natham police registered a case against Mr. Vishwanathan under Section 171E (bribery) of the IPC. Further investigation is underway.
