Sports organizers told AFP on Tuesday that the French government has discussed a possible “delay of a few days” of this year’s French Open. Discussions between the ministry and Roland Garros officials also included how the tournament might be able to accommodate fans who were largely shut down by the delayed version of 2020. This year’s program is scheduled to be held from May 23 to June 6, with the first round beginning. A spokesperson for the ministry told AFP, “There is a discussion going on with the organizers, particularly about ways to welcome the public.”

“A delay of a few days is under discussion,” she said.

In late March, the new president of the French Tennis Federation (FFT), Gilles Moreton, indicated that he was working on almost all scenarios.

He said that only they consider “not dare” those who were at the climax – a 100 percent viewer level and outright cancellation.

“At the moment we are on track, the tournament is on due date,” he said.

“But if we go into total lockdown for two months, we will obviously need to take measures – the worst outright cancellation, but I haven’t imagined it.”

The coronovirus ban was tightened in France last Wednesday, although all professional sports are running behind closed doors. President Emanuel Macron has expressed a desire to re-open theaters, museums and theaters in mid-May.

Last year Roland Garros was delayed by four months and its long held May and June slots were held in September and October instead.

The crowd was limited to just 1,000 spectators each day.
