The epidemic has shown multilateralism to be the way forward;  India is an example: IPU chief

His remarks came days after British MPs discussed the opposition of farmers in India.

Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Duterte Pacheco said the coronovirus epidemic has shown that multilateralism is the way forward and said that India has set an example by providing vaccines to other countries.

Addressing members of both houses of parliament in the Central Hall, Mr. Pacheco welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership and said that with concrete decisions and actions taken by him, India has reduced poverty to a much larger extent Achieved economic and social development which is the most important task for all politicians.

Talking about the COVID-19 epidemic, Mr. Pacheco said that it has shown the world how small it is and suggested that multilateralism is the way forward.

“This epidemic shows how small we are. Multilateralism is the solution to this and India is an example, ”said the head of the international body of legislatures.

Referring to India’s decision to provide vaccines to other countries during the pandemic, he said, “With your courage, you take measures … You give concrete help to many other countries of the world.” Member of Parliament of Portugal, Mr. Pacheco described India as a special friend of the IPU and said that it played an important role in parliamentary diplomacy.

Stating that India should get a proper place in the global order, he said, “Portugal supports India’s claim for permanent membership of the (United Nations) Security Council.” Speaking at the event, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that India clearly has a policy against expansionism and terrorism.

Mr. Birla also said that no parliament should debate the laws passed by the legislatures of other countries and issues related to their sovereignty.

His remarks came days after British MPs discussed the opposition of farmers in India.

Underlining that India has always worked for global peace and tranquility, Mr. Birla said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has clearly stated its policy against global terrorism and expansionism.
