The Taluk administration has imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC) and ordered the postponement of the annual fair of Sri Mahanteshwar Temple in the village to ensure peace after tension in Dornahalli village of Shahpur shuk in Yadgir district. A group of skirmishes and stone pelting took place after an 18-year-old youth allegedly insulted the ‘Shivling’ and posted a picture on social media on Thursday.
The youth, identified as Basavaraj’s son Mallikarjuna, has been arrested.
On Thursday night, some activists of Hindu organizations and village residents blocked the main road demanding immediate action against the accused after posting a photo.
According to a case filed by Sharanasappa, DSS organizer, on Thursday, the miscreants suddenly entered an area where Dalits were residing and allegedly started hurling derogatory words and lathis, rod and Attacked with chili powder.
Police personnel already present on the spot to control the situation said that the miscreants were injured after stone pelting. Additional police force was brought immediately to bring the situation under control
Following the incident, the tehsildar of Shahpur, Jagannath Reddy enforced prohibition and postponed the scheduled annual fair of Sri Mahanteshwar temple on Friday to prevent possible clashes in the village.
The order stated that the prohibition order would remain in force till further notice. The order also banned people from collecting and carrying weapons.
Police has registered three cases. Based on the complaint, a case was registered against Mallikarjun for insulting the ‘Shivling’. A second case was registered by the police against 25 people accused of joining the stone pelting. A third case was registered on the basis of Sharanbasappa’s complaint against 27 people for allegedly assaulting and abusing them for their caste. Cases were registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and sections 3 (1) (r), 3 (1) (s), and 3 (1) (w) of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities). Act, 1989.
‘Now in control’
He said, ‘We have registered three cases and arrested three accused, including Mallikarjun. Superintendent of Police Hrishikesh Sonawane said that an additional police force has been deployed to prevent any untoward incident.
But despite the efforts of the police, devotees are upset with the postponement of the annual fair, the villagers are also afraid. “It was not a good trick. We are in a situation that has forced us not to trust each other, ”said an elderly villager.
