The Tanner Foundation inaugurated three dialysis machines at its Thiruverkadu, Ambattur and Nungambakkam units this week.
According to a press release, the machines were donated by the Essave Foundation and Rane Group. Speaking on the occasion, the founder-trustee of the Tankar Foundation, Georgie Abraham, said that kidney diseases were on the rise, with donations such as these being deeply praised.

Every year, about 2.5 lakh people in India fail in their kidneys. In Tamil Nadu, approximately 14,440 individuals suffer from kidney failure every year and only 10% have access to treatment. From June 1993 to February 2021, TANKER provided 3,92,099 free and subsidized dialysis to 1,849 patients. It has 11 concessional dialysis units with a total of 157 stations.

Meanwhile, Raila Hospital on Thursday launched the “South Chennai Dialysis Support Group”. It aims to connect and support people undergoing dialysis and to create awareness among people with dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy and other treatments. It will conduct regular meetings and campaigns which will be taken up in hospitals in future. It will also have a Steering Committee of Doctors, consisting of Nephrologists and Urologists.
A press release said that the chairman and MD of the hospital, Mohammed Raila, said that they wanted to intervene before people arrived at the emergency room after kidney failure.
World Kidney Day was observed at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital. Kidney donors and their families shared their experiences on the occasion.
