Of the Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate for Thiruthuraipondi (reserved) constituency in Thiruvurur district, amidst the throng of thriving candidates who contested the assembly elections on 6 April in Tamil Nadu. Marimuthu, Stark stands in reverse.
The 49-year-old political activist, who lives in a palatial house in Kaduvakudi, has spent half his life fighting with the party workers for public reasons. His wife Jayasudha is an agricultural laborer.
Mr. Marimuthu, who was born in a family of poor agricultural laborers belonging to a Scheduled Caste, sheds light on their economic status. “Politics is my life, and I have no other business. My wife is in agriculture, and we cultivate the leased land. We get what we have,” says Mr. Marimuthu , Whose two children are in high school.
A Bachelor of Commerce and Graduate, Mr. Maryamuthu, a Commerce graduate, joined CPI in 1994. He was attracted by the work done by the party for the common people as he was “one of them”. “My only aim is to serve the public; It is my politics to reflect the aspirations of the Dalits, ”affirms Mr. Marimuthu, who is currently the Kottur Central Secretary of the CPI.
There is a large concentration of marginal farmers and landless daily laborers in the constituency. “If I am elected, I will try to ensure that the benefits of government schemes reach these laborers, many of whom live on the land of Porambok and the temple. Lack of job opportunities in the constituency is another concern for him. “Many youths go to other districts for jobs. I will explore the feasibility of setting up a paper manufacturing unit as paddy straw is abundant here.
Since the constituency is economically, socially and educationally backward, it plans to consult experts to prepare a plan for the development of the area and prevent seawater intrusion. He says he will work on the conservation of mangrove forests in Muthupet Lagoon and tourism promotion.
Mr. Marimuthu, who filed his nomination on Wednesday, announced in his affidavit that his wife owns the ancestral home, where the family resides, and 75 cents of agricultural land, totally 75 1.75 lakhs. He has ₹ 3,000 in his hand and ₹ 58,000 in his bank account. His wife has ₹ 1,000 in his hand and ₹ 3,000 in his bank account. His wife and daughter own three denominations of gold jewelery.
Although Thiruthuraipondi is a communist heartland and leftist candidates have won from here 11 times since 1962, the CPI lost the seat to the DMK in 2016, contesting as part of Makkal Nala Kutani.
With his rich constituency experience, Mr. Marimuthu is confident to restore the party’s pride in the constituency this time.
