Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2021 |  Over 6,660 nominations received

With Friday being the last day for filing nominations for the Assembly elections to be held on 6 April, 11,665 sets of nominations (up to 11am) have been received by the Election Commission.

Of them, 986 nominations have been received from women candidates and three from transperson.

Multiple enrollment

Several candidates from major parties have filed several nominations for contingency. The total number is expected to decrease after Monday after scrutiny, rejection and withdrawal.

For the 2016 assembly election, 6,627 sets were received. Of them, 719 were filed by women and four by members of the third gender. After scrutiny, rejection and withdrawal, 3,728 candidates contested.

95 in Karur

Karur received the highest number of nominations, 95. Mettur in Salem district and Kangayam in Tiruppur district saw 73 and 58 nominations respectively.

At Edappadi in Salem district, where AIADMK co-coordinator and Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami is contesting the election, 38 sets of leaflets have been filed.

Mr. Palaniswami has himself filed four sets. At Bodinayakanur, 51 sets have been received. Among these AIADMK Coordinator and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam consisted of three.

For the by-election in Kanniyakumari Lok Sabha constituency, 22 sets have been received, including eight independents. A woman also filed her papers.

The nominations received for the assembly elections and by-elections will be scrutinized on Saturday. March 22 is the last date for withdrawal of nomination.

DMK President MK Stalin has filed four sets in Kolathur, receiving a total of 55 nominations.

DMK general secretary Durimurugan filed his nomination at Katpadi, where 22 sets have been received.

Mettur in Salem district received the highest number of nominations from women candidates, 19, followed by Srivilliputhur, 14. Three sets are derived from transpersonals in Mylapore and Madurai South.
