With the Model Code of Conduct coming into force, 1452 licensees handed over their weapons to police officers for safe storage.
Election officials had asked all those in possession of licensed weapons to surrender at the licensed arms storage center which is under the control of the city police. With the Model Code of Conduct coming into force, it became mandatory that licensed weapons were surrendered. However, armed guards of central or state uniformed services and banks were exempted.
The city police is taking several steps to prevent any untoward incident in the assembly elections, including being forced on history-sheets, firefighters. According to sources, the police initiated proceedings against more than 2600 history-sheets and initiated a peaceful conduct of the elections under Section 110 of the CrPC against the crisis front in the city.
Since the model code of conduct came into force, the city police has registered more than 219 cases of election code of conduct violations and other minor disturbances. Police carried out a flag march on the border of Tambaram and St. Thomas Mount Police Station on Sunday.
