Twitter Files Part 2: Secret Group of Vijaya Gadde, Parag Agrawal Made Decisions Jack Dorsey Didn’t Know, Says Elon Musk

New Delhi, December 9: Elon Musk on Friday released the “Twitter Files” season 2, revealing that the micro-blogging platform had a secret group that included former legal and public policy head Vijaya Gadde, then CTO Parag Agrawal and Yoel Roth, former global head of trust and safety, that made controversial decisions including “shadow banning” high-profile users without informing then CEO Jack Dorsey.

This time, the “Twitter Files Two” were released by Bari Weiss, Founder and Editor of The Free Press, on the micro-blogging platform and endorsed by Musk. “Controversial decisions were often made without getting Jack’s approval and he was unaware of systemic bias. The inmates were running the asylum. Jack has a pure heart imo (in my opinion),” tweeted Musk. Twitter Will Soon Start Freeing the Name Space of 1.5 Billion Accounts.

Weiss said that the “investigation reveals that teams of Twitter employees build blacklists, prevent disfavoured tweets from trending, and actively limit the visibility of entire accounts or even trending topics — all in secret, without informing users”.

“This secret group included the Head of Legal, Policy, and Trust (Vijaya Gadde), the Global Head of Trust & Safety (Yoel Roth), subsequent CEOs Jack Dorsey and Parag Agrawal, and others,” she mentioned in a tweet thread. Twitter always denied that it did such things.

In 2018, Gadde and Kayvon Beykpour, Head of Product, said: “We do not shadow ban. And we certainly don’t shadow ban based on political viewpoints or ideology.” Weiss said that what many people call “shadow banning”, Twitter executives and employees call “Visibility Filtering” or “VF”.

“VF refers to Twitter’s control over user visibility. It used VF to block searches of individual users; to limit the scope of a particular tweet’s discoverability; to block select users’ posts from ever appearing on the atrending’ page; and from inclusion in hashtag searches,” she claimed.

The secret group is where the biggest, most politically sensitive decisions got made. “Think high follower accounts, controversial,” another Twitter employee told us. For these “there would be no ticket or anything”.

Weiss further tweeted that Twitter once had a mission “to give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers”. “Along the way, barriers nevertheless were erected. All without users’ knowledge,” she added.

The “Twitter Files Two” came after Dorsey challenged Musk to stop creating sensation around the ‘Twitter Files’ and make everything public instead “without filter”. Musk last week released the first episode of ‘The Twitter Files’ into the controversial decision to suppress Hunter Biden’s laptop story on the platform. Elon Musk Says Twitter Working on Software Update That Will Tell Users If They Have Been Shadowbanned.

Dorsey challenged Musk on Twitter that “if the goal is transparency to build trust, why not just release everything without a filter and let people judge for themselves? Including all discussions around current and future actions? Make everything public now”.

Musk replied on Thursday: “Most important data was hidden (from you too) and some may have been deleted, but everything we find will be released.” The episode 1 of the ‘Twitter Files’ mainly implicated Gadde in suppressing US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden’s laptop story on the platform.

Without revealing how he obtained them, independent journalist and author Matt Taibbi shared the ‘Twitter Files’ on the platform, with an endorsement by Musk.

‘Twitter Files’ Revealed by Elon Musk Implicates Indian-Origin Lawyer Vijaya Gadde

New Delhi, December 3: The ‘Twitter Files’ revealed by Elon Musk has implicated Vijaya Gadde, the Indian-origin former head of legal, policy and trust at the company, in suppressing Hunter Biden’s laptop story on the platform, while giving a clean chit to former CEO Jack Dorsey.

Gadde, who took an unceremonious exit from Twitter along with former CEO Parag Agrawal, had taken the crucial call to ban former US President Donald Trump and stop political advertising on the platform. Elon Musk Says ‘Twitter Serving 90 Billion Tweet Impressions per Day’.

Working with Twitter since 2011, she was a key executive responsible for overseeing the microblogging platform’s trust and safety, legal and public policy functions. Without revealing how he obtained them, independent journalist and author Matt Taibbi shared the ‘Twitter Files’ on the platform on Saturday, which Musk then endorsed, saying “here we go”. Elon Musk Releases Internal ‘Twitter Files’ Detailing Censorship and Suppression of Information at Twitter.

“The decision (to suppress Hunter Biden’s laptop story) was made at the highest levels of the company, but without the knowledge of CEO Jack Dorsey, with former head of legal, policy and trust, Vijaya Gadde, playing a key role,” claimed Taibbi.

“An amazing subplot of the Twitter/Hunter Biden laptop affair was how much was done without the knowledge of CEO Jack Dorsey,” he added. In October 2020, just before the US Presidential elections, Twitter had restricted a New York Post article containing unverified claims about the activities of Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, in Ukraine.

Twitter had said that the content violated the company’s “Hacked Materials Policy”. Dorsey had then tweeted that blocking the content without providing more context was “unacceptable”. He was also grilled about the episode before the US Congress in November 2020.

In April this year, Musk for the first time slammed Indian-origin lawyer Gadde over censoring exclusive stories related to Hunter Biden’s laptop in the wake of the Capitol Hill violence. “Suspending the Twitter account of a major news organisation for publishing a truthful story was obviously incredibly inappropriate,” Musk had said in a tweet.

Next month, Musk claimed he received a call from Twitter’s legal team being run by Gadde, accusing the Tesla CEO of violating a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) by revealing that the sample size for checking fake/spam users on the micro-blogging platform was 100. “Twitter legal just called to complain that I violated their NDA by revealing the bot check sample size is 100! This actually happened,” Musk had said in a tweet.

He had earlier tweeted that he picked “100 as the sample size number, because that is what Twitter uses to calculate <5 per cent fake/spam/duplicate". Meanwhile, Taibbi said there is much more to come, "including answers to questions about issues like shadow-banning, boosting, follower counts, the fate of various individual accounts, and more".

“There are multiple instances in the files of Dorsey intervening to question suspensions and other moderation actions, for accounts across the political spectrum,” he posted.

  • Elon Musk Could Fire Twitter’s ‘Chief Censor’ Vijaya Gadde Who Makes $17M Per Year

San Francisco, May 1: Tesla CEO Elon Musk could fire Twitter’s legal head Vijaya Gadde, who makes about $17 million a year and is one of the highly paid executives at the micro-blogging platform, once he takes over.

Nevertheless, Gadde will get a severance package worth $12.5 million that includes Twitter shares, reports The New York Post.

“Gadde, who earned $17 million last year as Twitter’s top legal counsel, could be on the chopping block as Musk is reportedly planning to slash jobs and reduce executive pay as he looks to secure financing for his Twitter bid,” the report said. Elon Musk Gains 6 Million Followers Amid $44 Billion Twitter Deal Saga

The 48-year-old Gadde reportedly broke down in tears when addressing colleagues about the future of Twitter last week.

Musk also tweeted a meme that painted her as oblivious to a “liberal bias” at Twitter as she was seen appearing on Joe Rogan’s podcast ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ in 2019 with former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. Tesla CEO Elon Musk Backs Free Speech, Says ‘I Hope That Even My Worst Critics Remain on Twitter’

The world’s richest man openly criticised Gadde for suspending the account of The New York Post that wrote an exclusive article about Hunter Biden’s laptop during the run-up to the 2020 US presidential elections.

“Suspending the Twitter account of a major news organisation for publishing a truthful story was obviously incredibly inappropriate,” Musk had said in a tweet.

Responding to online criticism directed at Gadde, another top Twitter executive defended her and accused Musk of “misogyny”.

Lara Cohen, Twitter’s global head of partners, also shared messages of support for Leslie Berland, the company’s chief marketing officer.

“Color me shocked SHOCKED that people are coming for two of our prominent female executives on day 1 of this thing,” Cohen tweeted last week.
