  • Apollo RT6: Chinese Search Engine Baidu Unveils Latest Autonomous Electric Vehicle

Hong Kong, July 21: Baidu, a Chinese search engine and artificial intelligence firm, unveiled its latest electric autonomous driving vehicle on Thursday. The Apollo RT6 will be soon be part of Baidu’s robotaxi fleet, as China pushes forward with its autonomous driving ambitions. It is a fully electric vehicle with a steering wheel that can be removed or installed when required, and will cost 250,000 yuan ($37,000) per unit.

“This massive cost reduction will enable us to deploy tens of thousands of autonomous vehicles across China,” Robin Li, co-founder and CEO of Baidu, said at the firm’s Baidu World conference Thursday. “We are moving towards a future where taking a robotaxi will be half the cost of taking a taxi today.”

Baidu already runs Apollo Go, an autonomous ride-hailing service using self-driving robotaxis with safety staff seated in the driver or passenger seat. It has launched Apollo Go in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, although the service is limited to specific areas.

The RT6 also attained the industry’s Level 4 out of five possible levels of technology. That means its systems can operate without a driver but must be pre-loaded with a detailed map, thus limiting the areas where the vehicles can operate. Citroen Drives in All-New C3 in India With Price Starting at Rs 5.7 Lakh.

Lower levels of technology range from cruise control, a feature that has been available for decades, up to Level 3, which allows hands-free highway driving. Self-driving robot carts already are widely used in factories, warehouses and other tightly controlled settings.

The Apollo RT6 was designed specifically with autonomous driving in mind, compared to previous generations where the technology was retrofitted on conventional vehicles, the company said. 2022 Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV Unveiled in India; Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos Rival Gets 27.97 Kmpl Mileage.

The steering wheel-free design allows more space for the installation of extra seating or other additions, even a gaming console or vending machine. Baidu is best known for its search engine and online advertising services, but in recent years has invested heavily in autonomous driving and artificial intelligence technology, including automated personal assistants and AI chips.

China aspires to lead autonomous driving technology globally but lags the US in introducing such services. Alphabet’s Waymo began offering driverless taxi services in Phoenix, Arizona in 2020.

  • Samsung Unveils Next-Gen 200MP Camera Sensor With Smallest Pixels: Report

New Delhi: Samsung on Thursday launched next-gen 200MP image sensor with the industry’s smallest 0.56-micrometer pixels that will allow smartphone users to take movie-like cinematic footage. ISOCELL HP3′ image sensor, with a 12 per cent smaller pixel size than the predecessor’s 0.64m, packs 200 million pixels. It means that the sensor can enable an approximately 20 per cent reduction in camera module surface area, allowing smartphone manufacturers to keep their premium devices slim. Samsung Galaxy F13 With Triple Rear Cameras Launched in India; Check Price & Other Details Here.

“Samsung has continuously led the image sensor market trend through its technology leadership in high resolution sensors with the smallest pixels,” said JoonSeo Yim, Executive Vice President of Sensor Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “With our latest and upgraded 0.56m 200MP ISOCELL HP3, Samsung will push on to deliver epic resolutions beyond professional levels for smartphone camera users,” he said in a statement.

The company will begin the mass production of the new image sensor this year. Since its first 108MP image sensor roll-out in 2019, Samsung has been leading the trend of next-generation, ultra-high-resolution camera development. The ISOCELL HP3 comes with a Super QPD auto-focusing solution, meaning that all of the sensor’s pixels are equipped with auto-focusing capabilities.

In addition, Super QPD uses a single lens over four-adjacent pixels to detect the phase differences in both horizontal and vertical directions. The sensor also allows users to take videos in 8K at 30 frames-per-second (fps) or 4K at 120fps, with minimal loss in the field of view when taking 8K videos.

The ISOCELL HP3 also provides an ultimate low-light experience. The technology enables the sensor to simulate a large-sized pixel sensor to take brighter and more vibrant shots even in dimmed environments, like in-doors or during nighttime. Furthermore, by supporting staggered HDR along with Smart-ISO Pro, the ISOCELL HP3 can switch between the two solutions depending on the filming environment to produce high-quality HDR images, the company informed.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Reality Labs chief scientist Michael Abrash, along with other Reality Labs members, presented their work at a virtual roundtable last week. The event focused on designs that Meta refers to as “time machines”: bulky proofs of concept meant for testing one specific feature, like a super-bright backlight or super-high-resolution screen.

“I think we’re in the middle right now of a big step forward towards realism,” Zuckerberg was quoted as saying. “I don’t think it’s going to be that long until we can create scenes with basically perfect fidelity,” he added.

Zuckerberg reiterated plans to ship a high-end headset codenamed Project Cambria in 2022, following its initial announcement last year. Cambria supports full VR as well as mixed reality, thanks to high-resolution cameras that can pass a video feed to an internal screen. It will also ship with eye-tracking, a key feature for future Meta headsets.

  • Huawei Unveils Foldable ‘P50 Pocket’ Smartphone in China

Beijing, December 23: Smartphone brand Huawei has unveiled a clamshell-style folding smartphone — P50 Pocket — that comes with a circular, 1-inch external display for quick access to notifications and widgets.

The device has been launched in China, though US sanctions (which mean Huawei can’t use key tech like Google’s Android OS) mean the P50 Pocket won’t make any impact in the West, The Verge reported on Thursday.

The company teased the handset earlier this month with a photoshoot focused on the P50 Pocket Premium Edition that appeared in Harper’s Bazaar China. This version of the device was created with Dutch designer Iris van Herpen. Huawei’s P50 Pocket Launched with Snapdragon 888 4G SoC, 120Hz OLED Display.

P50 Pocket has a gold or silver finish and a 3D pattern on the exterior surface that’s typical of van Herpen’s work, resembling feathers or leaves. It is Huawei’s third foldable phone, but it is first to use a clamshell design, the report said.

When unfolded, the Pocket’s OLED screen is 6.9-inches in size, with a 21:9 ratio and 120Hz refresh rate. The device weighs 190 grams and is just 7.2mm thick. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G SoC, a 4,000mAh battery, and runs Huawei’s Harmony OS 2.

The P50 Pocket’s main camera array has a 40MP main sensor, 13MP wide angle lens and 32MP “super spectrum” lens. There’s a hole-punch camera built into the main display, but Huawei notes that the phone’s foldable design makes it more convenient to use the main camera for taking selfies.
