San Francisco, December 15 : Video-streaming platform YouTube is testing the “Add to Queue” feature for the Android and iOS apps. • Instagram Tests New Feature for Disappearing Content

San Francisco, June 24: Meta-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram is experimenting with another new feature, Notes, that would allow users to post disappearing content.

The feature, being tested with a limited set of users, for the time being, allows users to post quick notes, like announcements, to their “Close Friends” circle or to followers who also follow them, reports TechCrunch.

Unlike Twitter’s new Notes feature, which allows writers to post long-form content, Instagram’s version is more like sticky notes that disappear in 24 hours.

The feature was first spotted by marketer Ahmed Ghanem, who published screenshots on Twitter that suggests Instagram Notes will appear on the app’s direct messaging screen in a new row above the messages themselves. Apple Likely To Release Its AR/MR Headset in January 2023: Report.

According to screenshots, users will not get a notification about Notes but will be able to see them for 24 hours in the app, as well as reply to Notes via messages.

The feature could help to highlight important messages from friends that they do not want to be lost in the inbox and could offer more visibility than posting to Stories. The platform’s tests will work to determine how users respond to the feature and if it makes sense to roll it out more broadly, the report said.

Through these notes, users can share details with close friends like if they would be unavailable on call for the next day or can be reached at an alternative number because they are travelling.

  • Jeff Bezos Tests Elon Musk’s ‘Free Speech’ Commitment, Raises Question Over Chinese Influence

San Francisco: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos on Tuesday took the first test of Elon Musk’s commitment to allow free speech on the platform, posting that Tesla’s business interests in China could give the government leverage over Twitter via its new owner. Elon Musk Buys Twitter: ‘Elon Is the Singular Solution I Trust’, Says Former CEO Jack Dorsey.

A New York Times reporter tweeted that “After 2009, when China banned Twitter, the government there had almost no leverage over the platform. That may have just changed”.

Bezos replied: “Interesting question. Did the Chinese government just gain a bit of leverage over the town square?” The Amazon founder further said that his own answer to “this question is probably not”.

“The more likely outcome in this regard is complexity in China for Tesla, rather than censorship at Twitter,” Bezos said. “But we’ll see. Musk is extremely good at navigating this kind of complexity,” he kept trolling the Tesla and SpaceX CEO.

Musk, who is worth $282 billion and over $100 billion richer than Bezos, has frequently criticised the latter on Twitter. From calling him ‘Copycat’ to after Bezos announced plans to launch a new satellite-based broadband service to trolling him on the micro-blogging platform, Musk is facing fierce competition in the affordable satellite-based internet market from Amazon.

Amazon this month announced the biggest rocket deal in the commercial space industry’s history, signing a pact with three rocket companies for up to 83 launches under its Project Kuiper internet satellites. The contracts total up to 83 launches over a five-year period, providing capacity for Amazon to deploy the majority of its 3,236-satellite constellation.

Just before Twitter announced it is accepting Musk’s $44 billion buyout bid, the world’s richest man tweeted: “I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means.” Will Bezos remain on Twitter or whether Musk will let him stay? Only time will tell.

  • Twitter Tests Changes To Make Image Descriptions Easier To Access

San Francisco, March 10: Micro-blogging site Twitter has announced that it is testing new accessibility features to make alt text descriptions significantly more useful and prominent for everyone on the platform.

With the change, images that have descriptions will be given a badge that says “alt” and clicking on that badge will show the description. The change has been a long time coming, but that’s not necessarily a surprise — Twitter didn’t have a dedicated accessibility team until 2020, reports The Verge.

According to Twitter, around 3 per cent of users will get to try out the new features for a month, and it will roll out globally at the beginning of April. Until then, it seemed like most people still will not have access to alt text descriptions unless they’re using a screen reader or are willing to jump through a lot of hoops. Instagram Removes Boomerang & Hyperlapse Standalone Apps From Apple App Store & Google Play.

As Twitter noted at the end of its thread, users have waited a while for this functionality. Image descriptions were introduced in 2016, but they haven’t been particularly prominent on the platform — it’s relatively easy to miss the button that lets you add one.

That may be because of how Twitter handled accessibility features in the past, the report said. Up until late 2020, employees had to volunteer to work on them alongside their regular jobs, and there wasn’t a team dedicated to making Twitter easier to use for those who needed it most. Since the team’s creation, Twitter has added live captions to voice tweets and videos, it added.

  • Omicron in US: Google Now Requires Office Workers To Get Weekly COVID-19 Tests

San Francisco, January 15: As Omicron-triggered Covid infections surge globally especially in the US, Google has said it will now require fully-vaccinated workers who are coming to offices to get weekly Covid tests.

Google will require anyone going to one of its US offices or facilities to have received a negative molecular test for COVID-19, reports CNBC citing an internal memo sent to employees.

The employees should also report their vaccination status and wear surgical-grade masks while at the office. “Anyone accessing our sites in the US are expected to obtain a recent negative Covid-19 molecular test before coming onsite,” said the company. India Reports 2,68,833 New COVID-19 Cases, 402 Deaths in Past 24 Hours; Omicron Tally Rises to 6,041.

Google offers free at-home testing to full-time employees. The company also offers contract workers free RT-PCR-based nasal swab tests. Last month, Google reportedly told employees that they will lose pay — and will eventually be fired — if they do not comply with the company’s Covid-19 vaccination policy.

Employees who did not comply with the vaccination rules by the January 18 deadline will be placed on “paid administrative leave” for 30 days. After that, the company will put them on “unpaid personal leave” for up to six months, followed by termination. Hong Kong To Suspend Flight Transits From Over 100 Countries, Regions Due to Omicron Variant.

Twitter Tests Notification Banner for Suspended, Locked Accounts for Violating Rules

San Francisco, July 28: Micro-blogging site Twitter is testing new notices that tell users if their accounts have been suspended or locked, and have been put in read-only mode for violating Twitter’s rules. The notices, announced on Tuesday, will show up as a banner at the top of your feed.

These are currently in testing across a small percentage of Twitter users on iOS, Android and the web, a Twitter spokesperson was quoted as saying by The Verge.

“The company is testing this feature after getting feedback from users that they realised they were suspended or locked and in read-only mode only after trying to tweet or follow new accounts,” the spokesperson added. Twitter Reportedly Testing Internal ‘Dislike’ Button for Tweet Replies.

The new notices spell out users status and provide some additional guidance for those who are locked or suspended. If you have been permanently suspended, you can submit an appeal, according to one notice, and if your account has been locked, that notice says most accounts get full access back in a week, the report said.

  • OnePlus 9 performance throttling: Company says new chipsets are ‘overkill’ for tasks like light gaming, browsing and more- Technology News

OnePlus 9 performance throttling: Company says new chipsets are ‘overkill’ for tasks like light gaming, browsing and more- Technology News

OnePlus has acknowledged that it “throttles” the performance of the OnePlus 9 Series when it comes to using 300 popular android apps. First reported by AnandTech, OnePlus was limiting the performance of the OnePlus 9 series in the 300 android apps that include Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and more. Geekbench reportedly removed both the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro from its database as they delivered the full potential of the Snapdragon 888 chipset in the benchmarking apps.

    OnePlus 9

In a blog post, OnePlus acknowledged the issue and explained the reason behind it. It revealed that smartphone chipsets these days have reached a point where their “power is an overkill” in some circumstances. These include social media, browsers and light gaming.

As per the statement, “In the case of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro, when you open apps or heavy games, the Snapdragon 888 processor, including the super powerful X1 CPU core, will run at full speed to provide the best performance. But with actions that do not require the maximum power, like reading a webpage or scrolling through Twitter and Instagram, it’s not necessary for the CPU to run at almost 3 GHz to do that smoothly. The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro reduce the CPU frequency in these scenarios to reduce power consumption and heat dissipation while maintaining a smooth experience.”

It further revealed that its R&D team also maintains the list of apps (based on the most popular Google Play Store apps). These apps include Chrome, Twitter, Zoom, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Discord, Microsoft Office and more. All the performance limitations and optimisations are finalised by running it by the testing team first so that the user experience is not negatively affected.
