  • Meta Rolls Out Dedicated Calls Tab to Messenger

San Francisco: Meta is rolling out a dedicated tab for audio and video calls to the function bar at the bottom of the Messenger app. The new tab will appear alongside “Chats”, “Stories” and “People”, and open up to a list of the user’s contacts, along with separate buttons for voice and video calls. It is a subtle change, but likely a move to make Messenger seem more like a messaging and calling app in the style of WhatsApp, reports Engadget. Meta Launches Updated 3D Avatars on Facebook, Messenger & Instagram.

Prior to the change, users had to open up a separate chat thread with a friend in order to call them, the report said.

The new feature allows users to dial friends directly, and may also serve as an introduction to those less familiar with Messenger’s calling features. According to Meta, audio and video calling on Messenger has increased by 40 per cent since early 2020. It expanded the features available to its encrypted messaging earlier this year, adding reactions, stickers, message-specific replies and forwarding.

The company’s plan is to eventually make end-to-end encryption the default for Facebook and Instagram in 2023. It has added a number of AR effects to its video calls, letting users experiment with filters, masks and animations. As far as free messaging apps go, Messenger has a long list of competitors, including Google Voice, Viber, Signal and WhatsApp, which Meta bought in 2014.

  • Twitter Reportedly Working on a Built-In Podcasts Tab

San Francisco: Micro-blogging site Twitter is likely building a tab dedicated to podcasts, as shown in a screenshot posted by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong. The image shows a microphone icon in the Twitter app’s bottom menu bar, which appears to lead to a page titled “Podcasts”, The Verge reported on Wednesday. Twitter May Soon Let You Untag Yourself From Threads: Report.

The screenshot does not show any indication of how podcasts could be displayed on the platform or if it will somehow incorporate Spaces, the platform’s audio-only chatrooms.

Right now, live Spaces are stuffed at the top of Twitter feeds, and it would make sense to organize them into a separate tab. Twitter began branching out to audio when it first launched Spaces in 2020 and dove even deeper into the medium with its acquisition of social podcast platform Breaker, the report said.

Spaces has been an ongoing project for the platform, which recently started letting anyone create chatrooms and allowing all mobile users to record conversations. Recorded Spaces are already a bit like podcasts, albeit only temporary ones, which only last 30 days. If a Twitter podcast feature is anything like Spotify or Apple Podcasts, users would be able to choose from and listen to podcasts at their leisure, with no rush to catch a live Spaces broadcast or listen to recordings before time runs out.
