  • ‘Amaraya’ is the latest single from Lucky Ali-Eliezer Botzer’s album ‘Lemalla’

‘Amaraya’ is the latest single from Lucky Ali-Eliezer Botzer’s album ‘Lemalla’

Lucky Ali and Eliezer Cohen Botzer hold forth on their latest single ‘Amaraya’ and the spiritual harmony that binds them

When singer-song writer Lucky Ali, a devout Muslim and proud Indian, and musician Eliezer Botzer, an Orthodox Jew and proud Israeli found each other, the music and poetry of their spirits immediately fused and ignited a new energy.

These lines scroll on the screen of the recently-released multi-lingual single ‘Amaraya’ that expounds the essence of the artists’ musical collaboration.

Lucky Ali and Botzer speak to us over a video call from Bengaluru and Tel Aviv respectively;their conversation as seamless as their music — each one giving space to the other to express, and at the right moment.

The collaboration started with the release of the first track ‘On My Way Home’ from their album Lemalla in November 2019. Coming post the pandemic lockdown, ‘Amaraya’ — meaning mirror or reflection in Arabic — according to the artistes, ‘is a song about hope, unity and connection’.

The track, released on March 31, is recorded in Urdu, Hindi, Hebrew and Arabic and shot at Lucky Ali’s farm in Bengaluru and some locales in Goa. ‘Amaraya’ is a soulful rendition that does not conform to a particular genre but regales the listeners with rhythmic beats and harmonies.

“I see this as a continuation of the journey within the song that will culminate in something that we are yet to discover. It’s a work in progress,” says Lucky Ali. He adds, “The producers had already set the idea of this rich music in place, we had to find space for ourselves, and it was a welcoming space.”

Agreeing it was “the development of a journey”, Eliezer says, “When we released ‘On My Way Home’ we didn’t realise that wherever we were, we were on our way home. But then we all got into this pandemic situation and the perception of home changed. ‘Amaraya’ came at the right time when we see humans connecting, no matter where they are. You could be isolated but could relate to every person in the world.”

Thirty-eight-year-old Eliezer visited India several times in the past and says he has deep love and connection with the country.

“When we were looking to collaborate with Indian musicians, I happened to see his (Lucky Ali) performance and heard his music and felt connected immediately. First, we got in touch with him on phone and were so amazed by his personality,” recalls Eliezer and adds, “I’m privileged and honoured to be a student to Lucky… the whole relationship is not just about sharing ideas but also opening our hearts to create harmony together.”

Emphasising on the point that it matters whom he collaborates with, Lucky Ali says, “The people I’ve worked with and whom I’m working with, I have known them for years. Musicians are friendly people among themselves.”

What’s important is the vibe that you feel besides the love and faith in your work, he adds. “I look for no other connotations. Eli and his family are very simple people. He’s a very respected musician and he’s someone who’ll never misuse that talent, he’s a responsible family man, we want to see our children’s growth along with our growth… so that’s the connection.”

The song ‘Amaraya’ has vocals by the duo’s daughters, admittedly satisfying for the proud fathers. “Apart from our daughters, different musicians from Israel were part of this project. Through the right tunes, the right relations develop all the time. This collaboration is all about different musicians and cultures but at the core of it is the simplicity of friendship. This is the beauty of this project,” says Eliezer.

The bond over a common perception of the world, music and spirituality and the Hebrew word Lemella meaning to ‘rise high’ couldn’t have been more apt for their album.

“We are in a journey that always develops and we are grateful for this collaboration and friendship. We hope to meet the whole world under normal circumstances when the pandemic is behind us,” says Eliezer as Lucky Ali nods in agreement.

  • Madhav and Prateek join hands for Tamil single ‘Ennodu Vaa’

Madhav and Prateek join hands for Tamil single ‘Ennodu Vaa’

This breezy number, composed by Madhav Krishna and Prateek Gandhi, is about a girl and her pet dog, their daily routine and what happens when she moves out

When you first listen to ‘Ennodu Vaa’, an independent single by playback-singer Madhav Krishna and composer-producer Prateek Gandhi, you think it is about two star-crossed lovers on the verge of separation. Or about a man trying desperately to woo his woman.

Watch the video, and you are in for a surprise. This breezy number is about a girl and her pet dog, their daily routine and what happens when she moves out. Indeed, for this writer who is currently a thousand miles away from her own pets, lines such as ‘sogam karaiyum nee arugil irundhal’ (sorrow melts away when you are near) resonated on a rather bittersweet note.

“And that is exactly what we wanted to achieve,” Madhav quips. “The song is not about two people but it is still honest, the relationship shown is pure. Anyone can connect to it.”

    A new challenge

For Mumbai-based Prateek, composing for a Tamil song was a challenge he was glad to take on. He has composed for the likes of Benny Dayal, Ankit Tiwari and Shefali Alvares. He was the voice behind the cricket World Cup anthem ‘Tum Khelo Dum Se’ and Hot Star’s IPL anthem. His independent music repertoire criss-crosses several directions — from Telugu to Hindi to Rajasthani folk.

“I love experimenting with new languages. Just give me the words and I can work with them. Put a newspaper in front of me and I can cull out a song from the top story!” he laughs.

For Madhav, also based and Carnatic-trained in Mumbai, this was a chance to dive into his mother tongue. He has crooned hits in Bollywood — ‘Bezubaan Phirse’ from ABCD 2, ‘Duhai Hai’ from ABCD — but never any in Tamil.

But why dogs and not humans? Madhav says the idea germinated during lockdown when he and his wife, Jayashree L Narayanan, who penned the lyrics, spent their evenings feeding stray dogs. The couple then brainstormed, created the storyboard and roped in fresh college graduates to work on the animation.

“As soon as the track and the lyrics were ready, we knew this was something special. We were going to see it through the end,” says Prateek, who took over the composing, mixing and mastering.

    Lockdown and independent music

The lockdown has bred a host of independent musicians in the country. More so down South, with recent hits like ‘Enjoy Enjaami’. The chance to tap into this nascent world was another trigger for the duo to launch a track in Tamil. “We have more tracks lined up and Tamil will feature predominantly,” says Madhav.

Prateek says he has composed nearly 23 tracks in this period. “I think musicians are connecting more to their own selves and started rediscovering their style. Music is what held people together during these tough times.”

‘Ennodu Vaa’ releases on YouTube on April 1, 2021.

  • The Delhi HC asked the government to order the single judge. To extend oil contract with Vedanta by 2030

The Delhi HC asked the government to order the single judge. To extend oil contract with Vedanta by 2030

The central government had claimed that the PSC with Vedanta would come under the new policy for such contracts. The dispute was opposed by the company.

The Delhi High Court on Friday, quashing the order of a single judge, directed the Center to produce oil from its Barmer oil field in Rajasthan in association with Vedanta Limited and ONGC by 2030 on their Production Sharing Contract (PSC).

A bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh allowed the central government’s appeal against the single judge’s order of 31 May 2018 in favor of former judge Cairn India.

The detailed decision is yet to be uploaded on the High Court website.

The central government had claimed that the PSC with Vedanta would come under the new policy for such contracts. The dispute was opposed by the company.

The single judge held that Vedanta was entitled to an extension of its contract, which was to expire in 2020, for a further term of 10 years on similar terms and agreements when it was first entered in 1995.

While the government’s appeal was pending, from May 2020 the PSC was being extended from time to time.

The order came on May 31, 2018, on the petition of Vedanta for expansion of PSC, which the company and the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) have with the government to extract oil from the Barmer block in Rajasthan.
